High Functioning Anxiety
On the outside, everything looks great. You tell everyone you’re fine too. No-one would even know that you’re struggling – you’re very good at masking. But behind the façade, overthinking is taking over, you’re plagued by self-doubt, you’re always on edge, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to switch off and enjoy yourself. Despite this, you’re still continuing to push on and keep everything going, but my goodness is it hard work!
If this sounds familiar, you may be experiencing High Functioning Anxiety, and CBT Therapy can help.

What is High Functioning Anxiety?
High Functioning Anxiety is a hidden battle. It’s characterised by people that are driven, and that achieve. On the outside you appear successful, confident, capable and in control. You look like you’re holding it all together both professionally and personally. But looks can be deceiving, as inside you certainly don’t feel confident, you for sure don’t feel like you’re coping, and you routinely feel anxious and overwhelmed.
Signs of High Functioning Anxiety
Common Symptoms of High-Functioning Anxiety include:
- Feeling on edge or frazzled
- Constant overthinking
- Pushing for perfection
- Unable to relax or switch off
- The need to be in control
- Excessive planning, preparing and list making
- Fear of criticism
- Always busy doing, never stops
- Easily overwhelmed

High Functioning Anxiety Risk Factors
Having worked with lots of clients with High Functioning Anxiety, these are the common risk factors I’ve identified:
Overachiever
You feel compelled to go above and beyond, particularly at work or in study, but in your personal life too. These means more energy and time put into things than necessary, and taking on more than your fair share of tasks and duties.
You fear failure, so as a result relentlessly pursue impossible standards, where nothing ever feels good enough, and your goal posts are constantly shifting.
Detail orientated
You can easily get lost in the minute detail of tasks, losing sense of time and proportion.
You worry about how others feel, and how they view you. You want to keep everyone happy, avoid conflict and do what others need of you. As a result, you destructively ignore your own needs.
You don’t like the unknowns. You don’t like things beyond your control. You like to know what’s happening, and be in control of all the moving parts at all times.
You’re an overthinker and a worrier, imagining lots of worst case scenarios, and getting pulled into trying to problem solve or prevent these hypothetical situations from occurring.
Comparing
You constantly compare yourself and your life to others unfavourably, feeling as if you’re not good enough or somehow failing

If you can tick several off this list, you’ll be more vulnerable to developing High Functioning Anxiety.

Living with High Functioning Anxiety
High Achievers don’t like to ask for help. They don’t like to admit they are struggling. Because that would be failing, and failure is a deep-rooted fear. That’s why you keep pushing, keep pretending, almost hoping the anxiety will magically improve by itself. The hustle culture also means that you want to keep doing and achieving, so you find slowing down or stepping back really challenging. Living with High Functioning Anxiety can be relentless though. It is a real stealer of joy and Sunday night blues become increasingly frequent.
